Haiku Friday: the Dammit Janet I love you edition

Haiku Friday

Janet and Janet
and Janet and Janet and
me ... I'm so confused.

Omigod, people. So there's a big name controversy/contest going on at Miss Ann's, but I'm having an identity crisis of my own here.

For my entire life, I have pretty much been the only Janet I know. Oh, sure, there was the kid I met at camp when I was 9. And someone in my freshman dorm in college. Oh, and that song.

But. That. Is. It.

I'm pretty much like Cher or Madonna in my world. You know -- able to go by one name alone.

So imagine my surprise when, early in my blogging life, I met Janet.

Interesting, but then again she signs her comments like this: ~JJ

So no problemo. Just a fun side benefit of the big, beautiful world of blogging.

Then I was cruising around, leaving my witty nuggets in the comments section of various blogs, and I found that someone named (ahem) Janet had been there before me.

What the ...?

Well, we have exchanged comments and emails for awhile now. It's a friendly relationship.

And then there was ... JANET??

Hmmm. I'm beginning to detect some sort of weird cyberspace vibe happening here. But Janet and I also exchanged comments and emails ... and life continued as before.

Until this morning.

When I checked on one of my fave blogs, Pickled Beef, written by the amusing and lovely Tink.

And found that I seemed to have been there already!!!!

Well, not really, but there was already a Janet who had commented. This one.

Gotta love someone who goes straight for the Harry Potter reference (right, Robin?).

Anyway, we now have exchanged comments and emails and ... well, you get the idea.

But I am having a massive identity crisis here.

There are all these JANETS everywhere. I mean, seriously, it's not like Janet is such a common and/or popular name.

Take Jennifer, for example. I am regularly confused by the number of women with the name Jen, Jenn, Jenny, Jenni or just full-out Jennifer. It's confusing as hell, people, but Jennifer was, like, the most popular name for girls in the '70s and '80s and still in the top 20 for the '90s.

Janet? Uh. Not so much.

And in the amazing coinkydink department, I actually was named after my great-grandmother JENNY ... only my parents didn't want to use Jenny or any of its possible derivations.

So, yeah. They came up with Janet. Simple. To the point. Easy to mispell (you wouldn't think so, but I've seen Janett, Jannet, Janette, Jeanette ... and Ja'net).

And reasonably unique.

Until now.

I'm not really the pissy sort, but I am a little protective of my unique-itude. And I was personally confused by all these Janets in people's comments. So I'm taking action.

Some of you may have noticed (or not) that as of Wednesday, I began signing my comments as The Planet of Janet (well, really it's all lower case -- cuz that's how i roll).

I also added a Janets Who Blog section of my blogroll. If you are one, let me know. I'll be happy to add you. We Janets have to stick together, you know.

But if you're some permutation of Jennifer ... dude, you're on your own!

Very clever, Janet. :) I like how you handled the whole thing.

So far I have come across another Joyce online, but worse than that, another Mom's Musings. Oh, well . . .

I have noticed lately around that there seems to be an influx of Janets. Funny way to deal with it! (:

Ha! Welcome to my world.

At my last job I was on a team with a girl who had my first AND last name. And her father's name was exactly the same as my husbands. We weren't related.

Weird.

Dude, I HATE that you're signing your comments with "the planet of janet".

YUCK.

You could be "Janet-the-first"

or "Janet-the-best"

or "Janet-the-Jew"

or "Limited Edition Janet"

or "Janet-Miss Ann's BFF"

or "Granny Janet" (dodging whatever you're throwing at me)

hee. I think I like Granny Janet BEST!!!

Wow! That is a lot of Janets. Just so you know, I don't know ANY Janets. You are still unique! ;)

Way to embrace the Janet-ness. I'm proud of you. And, I must say I'm the same way about my name. I only ever knew two Hollys growing up. Then, along came June Cleaver. And, I've seen others. It's tough to be totally unique in blogdom.

My grandmother's name is Janet :) She had it first :P

Seriously, it's cool that you email all the JAnet's. There are too many Sarah's for me to do that...they're EVERYWHERE ;)

To me you're the ORIGINAL Janet. *MUAH*

My mother wanted to name me "Sylvia". So I've always been happy with "Jenn". Except I was born in the 60's when everyone and their aunt didn't have the name.

Very cute haiku!

Hope you get the name crisis straightened out soon!

Hahaha Love it. If it makes you feel better I don't think I know a single Janet outside of blogging. :)

You're still the only Janet in my life, and you always will be (any others will promptly be given a nickname).

But oh how you are not kidding about the Jen, Jenn, Jenni, Jennifer, and Jenny contingency. I have had 7 variations of Jennifer comment on one post, and they weren't even all the same ones you listed. They are EVERYWHERE!

But, hey, there's only one Burgh. Almost, anyway.

Hilarious!!
I have a cousin named Janet. So I never thought it was an uncommon name. Mine however...you won't find another one in the entire US!! I used to hate it, when I was young and dumb I wished my name was any variation of Jennifer...I think that only last a year or 2 and then I embraced my unique name!!

Burfica said...

how funny and weird. hahahhaha

I've found lots of people that share my name, male and female, but I've only ever found two that have the same spelling as me.

MamaGeek said...

I've OFTEN noticed that. All the cool girls are named that, right? :)

Huckdoll said...

I am a Jennifer! Hence, why I named myself Huckdoll. When I first started posting and commenting, back in the day, I was The Other Jen :P

The only Janet I'd ever heard of before you was Janet from Three's Company :)

jennifer, Le Binky Bitch *heh* said...

If I use my google acct, my name is Jennifer, Le Binky Bitch. I usually just use the Other choice so I can use the link directly to my site...

I've thought about adding the Le binky bitch part, but that's just too much typing!

And I did notice that you'd changed your signature to planet of janet.

I'll be signing my name uniquely from now on, due to the sudden influx of Janets...and, well, to try to make you laugh :-)

I don't know anyone named Janet. You will be the first. Any other Janets I meet in the blogging world, or otherwise, will be second to you. Definitely. My name is Sarah. There are a lot of little children running around with my name which is kind of cute and kind of annoying at the same time.

I'm Janet's cousin (Fondofsnape) And I have always loved her name.

Great Haiku... and I thought Janet wasn't as common either... but then this is a big old blogosphere.
Sorry you're hitting this identity crisis... I've grown up with one... hence the big old shouting MEG at the end of my name...

have a good weekend, planet ;)
(I love your sidebar too, Janets who blog, too funny!)

I'm visiting your blog for the first time today, because I saw your comment on Absolutely Bananas. The part about the head in the jar got me!

My name is also Janet. I usually sign as JJ, too.

When I was a little girl I really hated the name and planned to change it when I was old enough.

I agree it is an uncommon name in the US. Apparently, it is much more common in Scotland.

Sounds like we blogging Janet's are a force to be reckoned with!

As the second janet in your "Janets who Blog" list, I plan to check out air my dirty laundry as soon as I'm done here. Actually I was pretty intrigued to find so many Janets and I was going to do a post asking how everyone got their name. I was named after my father's baby sister. They wanted to use my grandmother's middle name, Elaine, and my grandfather thought Janet went well with it. She died at age 2 months, and my father said all his life that if he ever had a little girl he would name her after his baby sister. So he did. And as to seeing Janet's everywhere, let me tell you there's nothing freakier than seeing your full name on a gravestone. Speaking of which, I lurve that star - can I steal it if I promise to tell where I got it?

Janet said...

Oh, yeah, I also found out recently that Janet is a form of Jennet (which is how they pronounce it in Canada). Know what a Jennet is? A donkey. Aren't you glad you asked?

Jenni said...

It never occurred to me to check comments to see if they were coming from the one true Janet! I have only known one other Janet that I can think of and two Jeanettes. Great idea with the blogroll of Janets. Power to the Janets! There is no freaking way I'm going to start a Jennifer blogroll. Dude! That would just be way to freakin' long!

Tracey said...

Hmmm. This is why having a picture next to your name is helpful in the comments. But having more than just a first name would be smart, I guess....

Dude. I know, right? I have never met another Janet. Ever. It's true. Now I go to leave comments on blogs and - - wha? - - I'm right below another freakin' Janet! I'm having an identity crisis.

I have to clear up the Janet-is-Jennet-in-Canada misconception, though. As a Canadian Janet I must tell you that, nope, it's just plain Janet. Unless you're in the province of Quebec.

We named our first DS Jason, the most popular name the year he was born...unbeknownst to us. What did we do for an encore? We named our 2nd son Jacob...the most popular name the year HE was born. OOPS! They will go through similar things as you! Good luck. LOVED the Haiku.

Dammit Janet, indeed. Every once in awhile there are other Maggies running around commenting. It amazes me. Flat out. Like you, I've mostly been the only one I knew (OK, there was one other a grade behind me in school). I have no solutions; I just share your anguish and pain at this difficult time ;)

Sandy C. said...

What a great post! I feel your pain. I recently saw a few other Sandy's in peoples comments *sighs* I used to feel so special :(
I've never met any Janet's though!

With a name like Joy....not the popular Joyce....just Joy....I hear what you're talking about. I think I've run into only three other Joy's in my lifetime and none while blogging yet. I think it would be cool but I think I'd be like you. It's just you for so long and then bam...all these same names popping up. I'd probably make my own group too.

Cricket's Hearth said...

Yes, Janet is not an average everyday name. Although I do have a neighbor named Janet - but to my knowledge she does not blog!

Ok Janet, thanks for stopping by my new blog, I'm so glad I decided to check your's out at well. Your name, Janet...I had a cabbage patch doll and her middle name was Janet...I've yet to find another blogger named Janelle...I'm sure now that I said that I'll find like a bajillion!!! Happy Haiku Friday to you!

Melissa said...

I have noticed a lot of Janets. A disproportionate number I would say.

There are also a lot of Melissas. I need to change my signature, too. Or add a picture.

I was often the only Danielle growing up, until I played basketball in middle school with THREE. OTHERS.

But they all spelled their name: DANYELL. Horrible, if you ask me. We all ended up going by our last names but we won trophies and the engraver also spelled my name Danyell. I was so mad and the coach never had it fixed. My father still has the trophies. And they still make me mad.

Gift of Green said...

That is so funny because lately a lot of the blogs I've been reading are being "run" by Amys! Do we gravitate to bloggers who have the same names as we do!?

Janet said...

Having done a recount, I am actually third in the list. Yes, I really can count. Just not all the time.
Oh, and Janet from Three and Holding, thanks for correcting me. I read a mystery series once which was set in Canada and the heroine's name was Janet which the author assured her readers was pronounced Jennet. So she obviously wasn't from Canada either.

Janet was a Top 100 Most Popular (in the U.S.) name from 1928 to 1970, and hung around in the Top 200 until 1983.

The Jen/Jenny/Jennifer thing is OUT OF CONTROL, as is the Jess/Jessica thing. People need more unusual names. Like Swistle.
